At Leiden University, we use the term "first-generation" or "first-gen" to refer to students of any and all identities and backgrounds who are the first in their immediate family to attend university.
Proud to Be First seeks to engage and support students who self-identify as first-generation students. The peer-group coaching is designed to support first-generation students in making a successful transition to university. These goals are accomplished by helping students to create supportive networks, establish personal and academic goals, get connected to campus resources and services, and meet other first-generation students, faculty, and staff.
